Intro 2 Handbuilding: Wednesdays 6 - 9pm 09/23 - 11/08

What is it?

An 8 week course that covers the basics of working with clay, from forming to glaze finishing. You’ll learn handbuilding techniques such as coil, slab, and pinching methods, and get a chance to play on the potter’s wheel. This class runs like a “choose-your-own-adventure” experience, where you may work independently and create projects of your own choosing, and/or follow along with a weekly demo showcasing a specific technique or form. In addition to class times you will get 1 additional 3 hour “open studio” session where you can practice skills and work on projects. The studio is equipped with:

• clay

• tools

• glazes

• 2 handbuilding tables

• 1 potter’s wheel

• shelf storage

• lounge area with tea and snacks

The cost of instruction, 25 lbs of clay, glazes, and tools is covered when you sign up. You really only need to bring yourself, an apron, or some good old studio clothes.

When is it?

The class will run on Wednesdays from 6 - 9 pm, September 9th - October 28th.

Where is it?

in a cozy home pottery studio complete with tea & snacks, relaxing ambient tunes, and a small group atmosphere. The studio is located in Kingsessing near 55th and Springfield. Specific address will be provided upon registration!

*Unfortunately the studio is not ADA accessible. There is a small single step up into the space.

Who is it for?

This is a beginners to intermediate class for folks primarily looking to make pottery using handbuilding techniques. Absolutely zero experience required! This is not a wheel-throwing class, although there will be a wheel available for folks to explore should they have an interest! The studio welcomes those who believe in liberation for all, and are able to honor the following community agreements:

• be kind and respectful to yourself, the space, and others (please respect boundaries around time and clean up after yourself.)

• come as you are & communicate your needs (Please feel no shame, guilt, or obligation to present a certain way, these are trying times. I’m here to support and accommodate you!)

• Have fun!

Why are there different prices?

There are 3 different price points that you can choose from based on a pay-what-you-can principle. The lower end of the range allows me to break even on time, services, and costs for the studio (factoring cleaning, facilitation, materials, and doing firings). If you are looking for a relatively affordable way to get an all inclusive studio session in this a great choice for you. If you have generational wealth, grew up with a solid support system for creative practice and exploration, regularly have “spending” money etc. and would like to support the studio’s growth/a queer black working-class artisan, you’re welcome to explore the higher price points.

Health & Safety Details

The open studio will max out at 5 people per session. It is a mask optional space, but will have open windows, an air filter, and a fan for circulation.

Allergy alert: I live with 2 feline friends! They will not be visiting the studio/are not in the space often. Still, pet dander may be a concern for those with serious allergies.
